SimonJK, should he be allowed to carry on and be the exception ?

'scuse me, MadH, but I thought all this had been resolvified ?

Is your pole therefore supererogatory ? ;)

Does it matter who 'advertises' anyway?

I voted don't care - not because I don't care about Simon's posts, but because I don't care if he wants to advertise. I personally have the view that provided the links are confined to the signature line, what does it matter? I asked when I first joined if I could do a post on the Mobo forum for SWFBR (Annual Fletcher rally in Devon) and have a link. James approved as it is a not for profit event, but even so I have seen many signatures etc since that are commercial. As I see it, it's really not a problem and much like any other walk of life, we are perhaps quite likely to ask amongst our friends and acquaintances if they can recommend anyone to do X. Many who post on these forums have services they can offer and provided the threads themselves are not full of adverts I can't see the harm. Many of us have a good idea who sells what services anyway and we're all grown up enough to recognise that YBW are not responsible for/endorsing the businesses, services, holiday lets or boats for sale offered by various forumites! :D

Simon provides a valuable contribution and it's the right decision (IMHO) for him to be allowed a signature link etc. I would also add that if any of the big marine suppliers want to have a signature link then that too would be fine in my view - provided they were to offer a support service akin to the effort that Simon contributes!

Glad Simon will still be posting I find his stuff very useful, I think if you’re going to ban one person for his link then you need to ban everybody that has a commercial link in their signature or make it clear that no commercial links at all are allowed without exception and I think that would be to the detriment of all users of the forums in the long run.
