I took a trip to St Malo on Brittanny Frries this weekend - great service, sensibly priced food, pleasant staff. No wonder P&O are in trouble.

But I digress. As soon as we got out of range of the UK service, the mobile hooked up to SIMMIN, some sort of satellite system.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is is only on the ferry, or will it work when I'm mid-channel on Jissel?

It sounds like a sevice offered by the ferry, routing your mobile signal through a sat dome, or possibly an iridium line. We had something similar on my last ship, if the sound quality is like Yogi bear on helium, then it's Iridium. The other one, (Sat-C I think the radio op. called it) allowed a very cheap internet link to the UK but thanks to the administrative miracle that is our licensing authorities, it can be used anywhere in the world except UK waters.
