From what I have seen 90% of the time a model railway enthusiast is repairing ,,making or planning a new layout or modification........sounds very similar to many yachtsmen getting more fun fiddling with their boats than actually sailing!

There are definitely those who prefer to fettle, fiddle and drink tea in the yard. Suggest they get their rear ends and their boats out on the water and they'd be horrified! Being an idle git, I'd far rather do the sailing (strictly in fine weather) and not have to faff around fixing stuff, though there's certainly a great deal of pleasure to be had on the rare occasion when a job goes the way it's supposed to.

I think the biggest difference is that with sailing you can at least dream that you'll be able to get a female partner interested in it.

I’m guessing here but I get the impression these railway modelers are in their little man caves tooling aboutwith their empires and branch lines whilst the wife is down stairs........there are young women of a suitable age but they are hard to find as a sailing partner,a question of luck!

Just the opposite in my case. No interest in model railways personally but Jill has built several model buildings and owns some OO gauge rolling stock and a nice locomotive. And she is an excellent sailor.

It's funny you should say that. I've just sold my boat (partner had died a couple of years ago and I got an offer I couldn't refuse) but have moved in with a new chap and guess what we are building - an OO gauge which runs out from the garage and round the garden. He builds the track, we share the landscaping and I get to work the controls!

Some do, some combine the two, and do a lot of sailing. Model railroads don't provide a place to live, nor take you anywhere.

If SWMBO suggests running 00 gauge round the deck of our Moody, it could be a legitimate case for divorce.

And will the trains still run when on a beat in a rising force 6?

You will have to negociate with the unions about that...
Touch more tricky than leaves on the track.
