sim card changes make my phone useless?all providers?

I use a motorola 2200 car phone 8w output for the boat.In Sweden my tele2 comvic card dident work. nor my sunrise or SFR,? but then i had my french telecom card bought in Corsica 1996which continued to work in the phone.As did then my "tim" card from Italy
Now my sim card has "worn out" i wanted to replace it with a French Tele2 30mins plus free sms 9.90euros pm and 1 euro per mega gprs. my old French telecom had to be recharged with at least 20euros pm!!! Expensive!

The sim cards have been changed is there anyway i can modify either the card or phone to continue useing it??

Why do the new sim cards not work in the old phones?



In Europe portable is expensive becouse we MUST recharge each month or loose the card!Mostly i get calls useful! and have more than 100euros credit each year!! which i use pointlessly as FT gprs is to expensive!

I decided to keep my swiss card which i must recharge each 12months with 50sfr credit!and my Swedish comvic which is almost the same but has no romeing.and i dident ask for it.
The charge for incomeing call costs far less than the credit i waist with a monthly minimum with a no abonament card in France,once contacted or sms d i look for a hot spot and skype or switch on the SSB sms ing the frequency saves a fortune and the phones there if really needed, but a small phones not good for my ear nor works well when on the canals or coatal crusing where as the 8w car phone is perfect and i can call always with a clear reception and the antena on the mast or cabin roof.

I hope i can go on useing it

I have just decided to chuck my old Motorola phone when the credit runs out because it cannot be unlocked from Vodafone. Apparantly Motorola phones use a different method of locking to a service provider than other makes and are notoriously difficult to unlock, in the case of some old models like mine it is impossible. I am just going to buy a local phone in Turkey, where credit on Turkcel sims lasts 3 months, and is restored if you top up within a further three months. Avea credit lasts thirteen months, but their coverage is patchy. Does anyone know about Telsim?

Mines not locked and has been used with French telecom card, TIM italy cards and several others my "Mobycarte" the for runner to "orange" worked untill it expired becouse i dident top up the credit.

The problem is the new type of sim card, but, dose it HAVE to be a problem, or can i ask the telecom for a differant card?? if so what?

No good asking at the shops nor the telecoms agency as the know nothing beyond selling a new phone--then often havent a clue what gprs is and if the know what it is cant configer the phone nor give the nummber to call!!!

In this information age never have so many known so little nor care!

I suspect that your Motorola only accepts Phase 2 SIMs and that your Corsican and TIM SIMs are Phase 2. 2.5G SIMs are Phase 2+ and operate on a different voltage.

There's no way to modify the Motorola.

The short answer is buy a new, cheap handset. 2.5G handsets use the least battery and will remain in standby for days. 3G handsets tend to gobble battery 'cos they've got big colour screens and have to switch between 2 network technologies.

Most seem to understand that mobile phones move on with time, they gain featueres and functionality and open new ways to spend money by phone but few realise SIM's do the same. The SIM card is a complete computer in its own right, it has ROM, RAM and a processor running the software of the day offering new enhanced features with every new generation of SIM technical standard. Phones usually work with all SIM's up to the latest SIM standard at the date of manf of the phone, but thats it. New SIM's need new phones.

Your Motorola does only work wit 8K (=5 Volt > old version) SIM-cards you should ask your provider to change your SIM card to a 8K version so all will work as normal again, same problem occurs with the older fixed phones from BMW you provider knows about this problem, being arround for some years now.

If its a prepay card you could have problems changing it.
