..... concerning variable speed Silverline polishers. I bought one perhaps in 2018 with the 5/8" thread. Since then it has sat in the attic after a limited attack on the boat. Reasons for my failure at the time were attributed to not using quality products, specifically 3M. However to use 3M it seems I would need to buy an adaptor (05710) (e bay a mere £16 until you look at the postage from the States), or something from Zoro UK tools.........and then a back up pad, a compounding head and a polishing head from MarineScene totalling £137. A lot of forumites recommended the polisher.....are you still buying 3M products, if so where from? Or are there more affordable quality accessories for a 5/8" thread polisher. I could do £180 on this and know I would then have no excuses. Would appreciate peoples thoughts?

I have the silverline polisher and 3m pad (can't honestly remember buying an adapter though, but it was years ago!). I buy my 3m stuff from "Marine and Industrial" who seem to have good stock, are local to me and pricing is bit less than chandlers

I have the siverline too. I initially bought cheap pads from Toolstation / Screwfix but they were a false economy. I bought a lambs wool buffer and adaptor From a car body shop supplier and use it with 3m fast cut plus. Just bought the last lot of fast cut through eBay. The setup works really well and was worth a few pounds extra for the results and ease of use.

Thanks folks. It looks like the adaptor is the stumbling block, there is no UK source for the part no. 3M-5710 that I can find. So it is cheapo ones or talk face to face in a car body shop supplier. Marine and Industrial looks excellent and I might try a phone call. But I can't find anything on the internet at all.

Thanks for the link. Out of stock but it gives me a good direction to pursue. And in the description it does say for imported/USA spec polishers. I remember mine being described as something like discontinued or something, which explains things now.

With the pads 05704 and 05705 you don’t need a backing pad, they screw directly into the adapter and are double sided.
I like 3m products but in my opinion they make it hard work to find out what is needed if you are not in the trade.

That is soooo true.
I got some wonderful, detailed advice from forumite who is professional polisher and I was fully intent on unloading my wallet in 3Ms direction and did a LOT of research but it was a) very difficult to work out precisely what is needed for what and b) to actually buy the stuff. It should be there on the internet (but it isnt, or isnt clear) and, worse, there seems to be no retailer of the marine products that sells the full range and who can tell you what is what.

I felt quite bad obtaining the advice (which I intended to follow to the letter) and not fully following it through but I didn't feel confident ordering blind and eventually looked at the Farecla site. Simple: here are the different jobs (new gel, heavy oxidation, light oxidation) and tell us what you want to do. Then in each category use this bottle and use it with one of these pads (a choice but with product references) and one of these backing pads (product reference). Then rinse and repeat with a different product for the next stage. Couldn't really be simpler so rang East Coast FG and gave them the product references and ordered it. Same with Farecla Online for the bits that ECFG didn't have. Both nice to deal with.

All I have read tells me that 3M are the best product but sometimes best is the enemy of good.
