Picture of the battery pack would help...
Sounds like a big standard NiMH cell. I guess this is smaller than AA so like a watch/calculator button battery ? With two sandwiched together in a shrink wrap with soldered tabs...
But it could be a Lithium 3.6v that has discharged to 1.2v
