Generally speaking, Silva kit is known to be good. I have an S12 and the good build quality is obvious. That and the fact that it gets bounced around badly in my runabout!

Thanks. I just couldn't believe the price. GBP 300 for a DSC VHF with built in Navtex/GPS capability (when connected the correct reciever). I enquired at Southern Masts and Rigging in Brighton and there is a waiting list for them. Up until now I was thinking of getting one of the new Simrad RS80 series, but at GBP 700+ it doesn't seem worth it.
I've installed one on our Fairline Sunfury and have connected it to a Navman chartplotter. As this is the first VHF set that I've owned I'm afraid that my comments are rather superficial.
1/ The connection between the two units was very simple to achieve and seems to work well. However the signal wires for the VHF set are VERY thin and require some ingenuity in connection if they are not to break!
2/ The instruction manual does not seem to have translated well and is unclear in parts. Trial and error seems to obtain the required result but I think that I'll have to write to Silva about the selection of the choices when the distress button is pressed!
3/ I will need to either move the set or wire in an extension speaker for me to be able to hear it properly at the helm position.
4/ I currently have a problem with the memory scanning feature which causes the set to re-initialise periodically. I suspect that this may be owing to interference from the fridge but if not I'll have to contact Silva. The set does seem to be very sensitive to interference (from the fridge, the Eberspacher heating motors, the bilge blower ....).
5/ I do find the layout of the buttons a little annoying. Some are on the set itself, others on the fist mike. As a novice VHF user I've found myself wanting to change the scan options quite frequently - these are located on the set and not on the mike. Still, you can't have everything.
Just my opinions of course, but hope they are useful.
