Just connected the VHF on the boat and it transmits (very short range check via handheld) and I think it receives as 'RX' shows when I or someone local transmits. Suspectin it might need an external speaker I stripped back the wire to reveal a red, black, core -only (neg?) , white and a shielding.
Manual says I should have red, black, yellow and a white.

On the boat and it's Saturday so manufacture call suggestions not helpful! Any got over the same problem?

It has an internal speaker. Have you inadvertently switched the internal speaker off? You need to go into the Function menu, select Speaker Control, and turn Internal on.

Thanks all, as you knew - you were right. Next, and linked to my original question; The wires in the lead are different colors to the ones in the manual. Given that I don't know if the external speaker even works will I harm the radio if I try all the different possible connections?

The manual gives you the pin-out code, so just check your lead with a multimeter and work out which colour is which.

Ive got one in my conservatory, it was on Sacha when I bought her, ive just replaced it with an AIs VHF. it works fine, the screen fades in the sunlight (it was in the cockpit) Ive taken my MMSI? number out, it is dead easy to program,
