Hi, I've got a Silva S15 radio with a Silva dual-frequency NAVTEX aerial which is mounted vertically inside the boat. Aerial is away from anything electrical, but the NAVTEX reception is very poor.

I'd ideally like to mount the aerial on the pushpit, but it's so big people will think I've bought a yawl!.

Does anyone else have one mounted inside the boat, and if so does it work very well / at all?.

Theroticaly yes you can mount it inside but navtex reception on any brand is almost a black art. In a marina a forest of masts can stop a masthead mount working as will a headland between you and a transmitter.
In portishead marina reception is poor to non existant but out in the channel good.
I get perfect local transmissions only with a antenna mounted inside a building in bristol but not international frequencey!. I receive from Netherlands and Ffrance etc
inside so at the end of all this all I can suggest it fit it and try.
good luck

I have exactly the same problem - but no pushpit to mount it on either, so I shall be interested in any replies you get.
What did you do with the GPS ariel ?

I recently bought a Navtex unit and decided to save myself £100 by installing it myself.
First off tried to install the Navtex aerial inside in a locker (electrically "quiet") and received precisely nothing.....moved it out onto pushpit and now always receive (in Plymouth) Niton, Cullercoats, Oostende, Portpatrick and very often Valentia and Malin Head in Ireland.
Unfortunately there is no substitute in the radio world (and Navtex is a radio) for a well sited aerial.........

Have fun....

A friend of mine has this aerial which he connects to a hand-held PC when not using it on his own boat. Inevitably he ends up simply tying the aerial up horizontally to a hand hold inside the cabin. This doesn't seem to present any real reception problems - and recently worked faultlessly across the Med in this configuration. However - his reception from the second floor in his house (in the marina) is dreadful!

Regards, Jeff.
