Silva M298 hand-held

My dad's got one of these but the owner's manual isn't brilliant. On the side there are 2 buttons - the lower one being for transmission. But we can't work out what the top button is for.
Any ideas?

Its a short cut button to turn off the squelch (spelt that wrong haven't I) setting - effective allowing you to monitor the channel without the radio attempting to try and determine if a carrier signal is being broadcast. The effect only lasts as long as you hold the button down.
