If you've spun the wheel and got nothing then most likely the paddle wheel unit is u/s.
If its a Silva Nexus I have a spare unused one - they are a stupid price at the swindlery.

Steve,

I have the same problem with my Nexus Triducer (produced for Nexus/Silva by Airmar).

I've directed to this site to test whether it's the transducer or the display that's at fault.

http://faq.airmar.com/index.php?action=artikel&cat=1&id=39&artlang=en&highlight=speed

Airmar have suggested in my case that it's unlikely to be the paddle wheel, but replacing the whole transducer (log, depth and temperature all in one thru hull fitting) will set me back £200+, so I might try the paddle wheel first.

Mark, I very much doubt it is the paddle wheel itself that's at fault, that's all but impossible as there's nothing in it to go wrong. (I assume there's just a tiny magnet in there so If it rotates freely it will be OK. ) And at £22 for a little paddlewheel and spindle alone that must rank as one of the most cynical ripoffs in the marine world.

My Nexus transducers only lasted a few seasons, it was always the transducer unit that had to be changed.

MASH,

I fear that you will be proved to be right!

How many Nexus transducers have you got through?????!!

Worth checking whether the paddlewheel still has a little magnet in it.

Pvb

Will do -worth the small effort, even if it's a slim chance of being the problem, as others, including Airmar have said, to avoid spending £200 needlessly.

Will try any think not to spend £200 how much is it for a hole new Log?

Not sure what you mean by a whole new log - do you mean transducer, cable and display? If so, a Nasa marine speed log will cost you £120 online and a duet (speed and depth in one display) £170. You need to be careful about the transducer, though. You may end up with a different diameter from your present set up, which makes it impossible to fit afloat.

If you are wondering about the cost of replacing the through hull transducer that will depend on the precise model. There should be a white label on the cable close to the transducer which gives you the Airmar part number and the part number allocated by Silva/Nexus. Then it's a case of calling the service centre or looking on line.

I have been using Silva system for 20 yrs. The log TD needs to be replaced every 3-4 years. It just stop showing data like yours.

Later I find that with the TD unit be plug in & out weekly for some time, the cable to unit joint would leak & sea water entered the cable and might be the unit too (see photo 187)

Now I modify the TD unit like photo 137 so that the cable to unit join will not move when the TD unit is plug in & out. 3 years on and still OK.
Time will tell whether it could live longer than the previous units.

Great idea, mine will be getting that treatment next time I am on the boat.

I still got a brand new unused spare transducer/cable unit (and I've found the O rings) for sale. Gonna be a damn sight cheaper than getting one from a dealer...
