err, powerboat I assume? Daylight or Dark? Just head south and follow GPS. In powerboat either East or West entrances are fine ...just watch out for ferries in entrance of East. Marina entrance is easy to spot once inside outer wall (it's off to East side)

Once there, just take any berth on the left pontoons as you enter which are connected to shore, no need to call on VHF. These are visitors

Finger pontoons which sink when you launch on them from on high, so warn crew about this if you don't want any in the drink. No cleats , just metal loop thingies, so you need to get the line through which is unexpected to unexperienced crew who haven't been on this type of French mooring before. Tell the Capitainerie (Harbour Master) where you've berthed when you arrive. They speak good English.. No probs at all finding berths at this time of year!

um, not sure if you are serious now! But if you are as I assume, a commercially qualified YM instructor, then you will be well versed in teaching passage planning etc. In addition to usual chart/nav prep, you have pilots and cruising guides. You're not one of those fast-track YMs are you!?

Or perhaps you were after more specific local knowledge than implied in your first post?

I can edit my posts too! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

NIght approach is fun. First you'll see lighthouse off to port from many miles off (get them to identify and make sure approach is correct), you'll then subsequently see one or more lighthouses and flashing lights as you get closer to Cherbourg, some are difficult to identify, depending on course of approach. Green and Red's and cardinals on the East and West entrances are difficult to identify sometimes against all the other lights in the area.

If you get the chance, take them in the West entrance in dark, then you can motor in through inside the outer wall, and point out the ( I think cardinal, just south of the wall, which identifies the south end of a fish farm) V calm inside, and the motoring from West entrance to Marina, gives them plenty of time to acclimatise, wind down, and find marina entrance without your help, without worrying about ferries, and is a great safe way with loads of space to avoid other boats, to approach a new port at night. It can get disorienting in the dark though, so make sure you are very sure before you go in

Take then out in the dark too if you get a chance. Even good crews get disoriented trying to find either of the exits in the dark, cos they are inside a wall. Good practice without GPS or plotter!

I think it's roughly south and then ask when you see people on bikes with stripey jumpers and onions.
