Silly transducer question?

I have a Garmin combined GPS/plotter/depth sounder that I used on my RIB for diving which I now want to put on my yacht. The depth trasducer is a transom mount one.

Can I mount it under my yacht and run the cable up over the stern, or do I have to get one of these through hull thingies? I don't like waste, and don't like spending money either, if it can be avoided.......

I thought to sikaflex a bit of hardwood to the hull and just screw it onto that as if it was a transom.
 
If it's a GRP hull maybe you can use Sikaflex or even epoxy to bond the transducer to the inside somewhere in the same way that other echo-sounder transducers are fixed. Or even mount in a tube of castor oil or other suitable fluid bonded to the hull.
 
You can mount the transom transducer as an in hull simply by sticking it to the inside of the hull using an appropriate sealant (a hard one). This is what I have done with a similar Garmin device and it works fine (albeit probably with reduced sensitivity - it seems to run out of umph at >50m depth)
 
Ah, right, that sounds a bit neater. I don't really know how that works, but if I just bond it to the hull with resin, in the correct orientation, it will still work? Great.
 
I bonded mine with resin. Because it was on the slope of the hull, I made a little bund out of the material that comprises of two putty like mixtures which you knead together and form into the appropriate shape. I then filled this with resin and in two minutes, it had gone off enough to leave the transducer there.
