Might get to cruise down to the scillit isles later this year. How difficult is the navigation?

Are there many safe ports for a 30 ft sailing boat with 5ft draft? Any marinas or safe moorings with visitor berths where the boat could be left for a week or two?

Navigation is not difficult as far as I remember although we did chicken out once in poor vis but that was before GPS came along.

Pilotage around the islands with 5ft draught will need care.

No marinas as far as I am aware and the only visitors moorings are in St Mary's Pool. You choose your anchorage according to the weather.

navigation is not too difficult depending upon your level of skill, 5ft draft will limit when you move about between the islands so get your tides right. There are no marinas, nearest yacht marina is in Falmouth. There are visitor moorings in St Mary's harbour, Porthcressa, New Grimsby channel and Old Grimsby channel, St Mary's and New Grimsby ones are probably the most secure but will be subject to swell depending on the weather and direction.

To get the best from a visit to the islands be sure of your anchoring skills and use them as there are loads of good anchorages, which are free. If you decide to go into Porthcressa it is not mandatory to use the moorings there is plenty of room to anchor for free.

Oh dear, the correct terminology is "Isles of Scilly" best not to upset the natives.

that was my thoughts . They are very touchy about those things ....... Probably mostly the newcomers who after a couple of years consider themselves to be locals :)
