My newly installed Silicon Marine exhaust temperature monitor was showing an exceptionally hot exhaust on my stbd engine whilst pootling along at minimum speed last weekend, the temperature was very erratic, yet the water flow remained steady and the exhaust pipe was cold to touch.
The Port engine was showing only ~ 18oC, with the Stbd reaching over 110oC.
This is possibly the temperature probe sitting in a hot jet of exhaust gas from the turbo outlet, so I contacted Silicon, to purchase another temperature sensor so I could eliminate the sensor itself as the issue. The immediate response was David will send me a new sensor FOC. If the second sensor shows a similar pattern than time to find a different position in the pipe.
I wish to personally thank David at Silicon for the excellent attitude he has towards customer service, as I was quite happy to pay for the sensor, indeed if this proves it is the sensor position (by displaying a similar pattern of high temperatures) I will insist he accepts a payment for the sensor, and I will end up with an onboard spare sensor.
Has anyone had a similar problem due to the un-seeable gas flows inside the exhaust hose ?
The sensor is positioned about 150mm from the exit from the injection bend, where it sits about 25mm into the live gas / cooling water flow - PT1000 probe, with the sensor sensitive area presumably at the tip.
