We've just fitted a Radice rubber shaft seal to a friends boat to replace the stuffing box. Supplied with a small tube of Silicon Grease - I have a Volvo seal on my boat for which I use the Volvo blue lubricant. Can I use this clear silicon grease as it seems easily and cheaply available on the internet, rather than the Volvo grease? Anyone any experience of this grease? My Volvo seal has never leaked in 9 years.

Assuming you only use a small qty each application and having had the seal working reliably for 9 years I wouldn't use anything you do not know might or might not be compatible.

The sealing lips are very fine, so not much to dissolve if the grease used does attack the rubber.

So whereas silicon grease mught be just fine, I would suggest in this case sticking with the VP stuff is probably wise.

Just bought a tube of Volvo blue grease to grease the gears on my prop - under four quid so not expensive and using the 2 inch MacDonalds straw method that I used to grease the lip seals on old boat - - one tube would last four five years.

Not worth chancing it.
