I would be most grateful for any suggestions on where to get these cheapest, and on whether brass ones do the job just as well.

Just read your post again...re brass-no! don't use.
most of the brass thats now used here is crap & is usually too soft.
If you just want to hold up an instrument or similar ok, but even then get the best you can find, cheap brass screws are just that, cheap! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As you do not give any indication of your location it is difficult to say where you could source the screws but assumming you are in the UK then you could try here

If they are going to be used underwater or in a place which is frequently damp or wet with salt water please DO NOT use brass screws. They will disintegrate rapidly as the zinc is electrolysed out of them.

I saw someone mending a wooden boat with brass screws to hold the stakes together below the waterline once. I declined a trip on his boat.

I don't know where it sank in the end....

Bronze are more expensive, but they won't dissolve to copper powder after a season or less.

Brass may be ok for interior joinery, if the boat is reasonably dry.
