We have bungeed them, tied them to the toe-rail/pulpit/pushpit left them loose, it all takes so much time to do - Is there some sage out there who has the answer to simple silencing of the halyards please

Elastic will never work.

Clip one end to the pulpit/boom end. Pull tight. Return to mast. Take length of light line, say 2' long. Tie on end to lower shrouds. Lead line round halyards and shrouds. Pull tight so halyards are kept away from the mast.

On somebody else's boat you can often use the halyard itself or the slack from a mooring line as the frapping line.

If you don't want to use thumb cleats or frapping lines, the recommended way, just flick the halyard around the spreader tip and then pull tight.

or buy a boat which has the lines running down the inside of the mast, i don't suffer from the thrapping halyards syndrome.

For the halyards from the spreader i use a barton cleat which is bolted to a shroud.

Since you mentioned it - I had tied all halyards away from possible frapping and been on deck several times over two or three nights to find the cause of the noise - internal mast wiring! B~~~td

I used to have a berth near a boat that had internal halyards. It was bad enough for the neighbours but the owner must have been driven mad by it. [probably why he rarely appeared]. If it had been mine I would have altered it so that the halyards were external. Shouldn't be too difficult to fit a couple of extra sheaves at the masthead.

What is the attraction of internal halyards anyway? Reduction in windage? Better appearance?

You can add to your list - less likely to get a twist / wrap around a different halyard.

I have not had any problems with noise from mast, the wiring runs down some conduit inside the mast and the halyards are always kept taut, It is a bowman mast with in mast conduit.

Just found the mast and headsail reefing gear info, and been busy reading, amazing how much info is stored away safe, and forgotten about. just been reading about how to maintain the reefing gear, additional to the washing down with fresh water and where to grease etc...before i go to boat in morning..

so more bedtime reading for me... missus won't be impressed, she'll have to make her own cup of tea now /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Nobody has mentioned that despite one's best preventative efforts on deck the only sure way of silencing halyards is 3 or 4 glasses of decent claret then earplugs...
