Sikaflex 292 warning

The idea behind a torque wrench is to avoid over tightening nuts and bolts. It's the easiest thing in the world to waz up something with a spanner and a hammer but you risk doing damage if you do.

All depends on just how much you tighten and, yes it can be hard to judge. Problem with some keel bolts is that it's very hard with the internal joinery fitted to use a torque wrench which tends to have a long handle or, even an extension and ratchet. I've removed re-bedded and re-fitted 6 keels and (so far) none have fallen off.

I have got fed up over the 50 years I have been boating .That is sailing them building them and repairing them. I have used all the Sikaflex products and in general they are ok but just ok. Their UV protection is poor to say the least and the joints break down after a couple of years> SO I changed to a product called CT1 (toolsandsealantsdirect.com)

Thought about using this but have been put off by the description of it also being an adhesive as well as a mastic. Are there any problems if used on fittings which may have to be removed at some time?

Just a thought. Perhaps it is 252 after all, but the manufacturers labelled it incorrectly and then over labelled. Ring them and see if they are aware of such a problem and solution!

No, it's definitely the chandlery stick on label. Still waiting for the 292 to be delivered. Maybe tomorrow..........

After a recent experience with Sikaflex, I won,t be using any of their products again full stop.
My boat is undergoing a major refit and I bedded in a complete set of 10 new skin fittings using Sika 291"I" at the beginning of the year. I noticed that the Sika had not gone off (still hasn,t !) and contacted the tech dept uk. A rep came and took photos, samples, and the remains of the offending tube. During the course of his inspection, he mentioned that 291 "I" is a modified product formulated to confirm with new regs on use of chemicals etc and I got the impression that I wasn,t the first complaint that they had.
Anyhow, off he went leaving assurances that he,d get right back to me - that was in August.
Despite numerous e,mails directly to the company and the rep. not a dickybird, blanked completely.
Sika your product and your after sales service sucks !

I am so glad you posted this because I replaced the keel bolts (one at a time) on my Moody this Spring. The keel itself was not disturbed but I did scrape the antifoul and inevitably some old sealant from the keel/hull join just to have a look.

All seemed well so I resealed the (shallow) join from the outside using 291"I" and left it alone until I was due to launch five weeks later. At this time I discovered that it was not set and had the consistency of peanut butter. It was too late to do anything as the travel lift was due so I slapped the anti-foul on and launched. When I hauled out in October it was still a squishy mess. I intended to investigate next Spring but having read your post I am convinced that there is something wrong with 291"I" which I will remove completely and replace with another product to be determined on the advice of the forum. Maybe another thread after Christmas.

I don't know if it is a genuine mistake or not. I would like to think it is. It would be unfair to "name & shame" without evidence of a deliberate dodge.

if its the Megastore lot, I wouldnt worry about being unfair, they have been given several good slaggings on here in the past but still dont get their act together. Also dont expect to get your 292 tomorrow.
