I have a very pistol (correctly on my FAC) the cartridges that I have are from a batch made by Schermuly in 1971. Does anyone know the life of these, or where a new batch could be bought from. The gun is a 1" bore.

Tha last ones I bought from Phoenix Gun Co. 208 Leigh Rd, Leigh-On-Sea Essex SS9 1BS. Tel: 01702-714872. GBP 5 each. Please let me know how you get on as things may have changed since I last purchased.

I have never been able to find the life expectance of the flare cartridges. Everyone I asked said that if the shell is in good condition and the wax seal is still intack then it is OK.

Ask your local gun shop / dealer. They can order them in for you provided you can produce the necessary paperwork.

In the USA very pistol cartridges have a three year shelf life, and in Canada four years.
Outside of these times the cartridges no longer count towards the legal requirement. I am surprised that they don't have an expiry date stamped on them in the UK.

You need a licence if the very pistol comes ashore (presumably including laying up). A recent enquiry with my local police established the licence was free provided it was for life saving purposes only. As to where you buy one - no idea. Mine is Italian WW2 vintage 1.5 inch.

Many thanks to all of you who have replied to this. I don't know where a very pistol can be aquired, 'though I have seen a 'plastic' one of American origin (I think). Mine was inherited, a brass Cogswell & Harrison. I Live in Northern Ireland, so the paperwork is especially important - but I'm not sure about the 'hand gun' laws in the rest of the UK.
