I was at the boat show last weekend, so apologies to those who may have missed this bargain:
Memory-Map DVD with charts of the whole of the UK and Ireland is on at £30 rather than the former £50 plus p&p. Plus, I didn't realise that it has a Chartplotter capability (obviously your PC/Laptop needs a GPS input, available from Maplins at £20, or on t'internet for less), plus it is fairly decent for passage planning as it has route/waypoint functions.
So, my laptop that is Windows 7, has pretty good battery life anyway, ie 8 hours + (a Packard Bell Butterfly from PC World 8 months ago at £450-ish, and build quality is very good) is now a pretty decent Chartplotter (in a clear plastic bag, I would even bring it on deck). Add to that that the Memory Map app can go on a Smartphone that runs Windows Mobile/Pocket PC, many of which have better battery life that some handheld dedicated chartplotters, and you are away. Plus, you can send your PC/Laptop routes, Charts etc to your GPS enabled mobile (but DO make sure that your mobile has REAL GPS rather than Mobile Cell Triangulation, as the accuracy is poor when coastal and non-existent when further out)
Compare that to the iPhone ....
