It seems people are basicly not interested in this September's Southampton Boat Show judging by the response on here. Perhaps nearer the date people may show enthusiasm but negative feedback on this forum about it not being worth visiting doesn't . help.
This forum seems not entirely representative of the wider world, which still contains a fair few people who go to the boat show and appear to be enjoying themselves
Last year, it was sad to see that some of the smaller, and for me, key, exhibitors were unable to attend due to cost. It reminded me of the final years of the London Boat Show, which seemed to focus on attracting the “rich” and chasing large sales rather than supporting the right exhibitors who draw in genuine enthusiasts who want to talk to the experts.
Looking ahead, the RYA Dinghy Show in Farnborough could be a good model, keeping costs affordable for exhibitors while generating enough interest to attract enthusiasts. That said, as I’m reasonably local, I will probably go to SIBS this year, but I’m hopeful for the future of the "RYA (other boating organisations are available) Yachting Show".
Whilst I could never afford to purchase any boat displayed new at a boatshow and probably never will unless my lottery numbers come up, I love visiting boatshows just for the day out, the weather & general ambience is well worth the entrance fee in my opinion. It costs more to visit a farm with the grandchildren for a day out these days.
Last year the RYA offer was a reduced price ticket (£5 I think), as opposed to the completely free ticket it had been for many years. The offer typically comes out on email towards the end of May.
Dispite complaining a few time to the RYA they thinks all boaters are south of Watford and the RYA Dinghy Show in Farnborough is a sod of a place to get to for many of us,
As an example from Shropshire its a good 3 hr drive then parking, then an overnight hotel stay and even as a voluntary RYA instructor I get no incentive to go so why could they not have alternative years with a more northern venue
Like many others maybe this year is the time not to renew my RYA membership
