Shroud backing plates

On the transom of my E30 the backstay U bolt fitting is very close to a large cleat, is it Ok to replace a small backing plate on the U bolt with a large marine ply pad that also backs up the cleat?

Sounds like a good idea, but use a stainless washer or plate as well so the plywood does nt squash too much.

I have a big stainless steel plate on the backstay U bolt, off to chandlers tomorrow for new cleat and penny washers, thanks.
