My first mate is dropping very strong hints that she would like a teak grating in the heads of our boat (Legend 290). Unfortunately the area to be covered is not rectangular so a kit is not feasible. A search with Google has only shown KJ Howells as a possible source. Does anyone know of anywhere else that would create a teak grating for the heads floor to dimensions supplied to them. Obviously just after Christmas my pocket is threadbare so a reasonable price is important.

You say a kit is not feasible but a rectangular kit grating with odd shaped bits attached (glued and dowelled or with a biscuit jointer if you have access to one) might be a solution.

I made my own out of some old teak strips and it is an odd shape. OK, its not got the posh castle joints or whatever you call them but it cost next to nothing and works just fine.

The Howells kit can be customised to non-regular shapes. Likely to be much cheaper than made to measure as there is a lot of labour involved.

KJ Howells made up special gratings for us for a previous boat and we were very happy with the results. They were quite reasonably priced too, so why not use them? Send them a cardboard or hard wood pattern and ask for a quote. Tell them that they are showr gratings as they use a closer spaced pattern which is nicer on bare feet.

They are a very friendly and helpful firm in my experience - or is that just because we have spent so much money with them over the years?

Ikea sell a box made from walnut just the same as teak gratings ( it comes flat-packed), I left a piece outside for 6 months and it didn't suffer, so the glue is waterproof. If I remember correctly, you get 3 sides 1000mmx500mm and 2 ends 500mmx500mm. You may be able to cut it to fit your heads.
