To my shame I have never learned splicing. The simple explanation for it is that whenever I need anything spliced I just give it to my Dad, and he is delighted to do it. However having been a grown man for a few decades now, I feel it is perhaps time to cut the apron stings as it were.

Anyone recommend any really good online resources to help me? The old boy might be a splicer, but he is no teacher!

Just looking for fairly simple stuff with three strand, none of your wire rope splices for me.

All you really need to start with is an eye splice to make your warps look tidy (better then a bowline) and an end splice to stop them all falling apart.
If you really want to get into it get Ashleys ?? book of knots?

The first thing having started to separate the three strands is to do a rough whipping on each to stop them unravelling themselves Sellotape will do.

Unravel about 6" for an ordinary sized rope, bend it round in a loop, and then feed each strand under three consecutive strands of the standing part, 2 on the side facing you, one round the back.
You will know immediately if you have got it right because the ends will radiate evenly round the rope. This is the only bit you need to get right, because all else will follow. If you find you have two strands looped through the same strand, you need to shift one along.

After that just keep working along feeding each strand over and under until you run out.

Then practice. Pull it tight as you go along. You can do fancy stuff like thining them down later when you have mastered it.
Put that gluey stuff on the ends to stop them fraying.
