Probably all the memorable boating events in my life have been out of normal surburban comfort.Sheltering under trees in the rain eating a picnic in fathers 15 foot lugger, hovering too on a dark night in half a gale off Start Point ,surfing along with a quartering wind off Cerdeira after a gale, events and to some extent physical discomfort that you don’t get on land are part of the joy of sailing orboating

😂😂
You have forgotten all the joyful ‘ out of the zone’ bits? Eg Arriving in Spain for the very first time?

No wonder boats sales are static in Galicia for the foreseeable future

Tricky one that

Yes your right of course…..no way can you see the dark blue coastline appear intermittently as you ride on the swell from your. Comfortable settee!

Seeing the first tentative 'glim' of the first big lighthouse after 1200nm..... then realising it's way up high on a clifftop, and the coastal lights won't be visible until tomorrrow!

I don't think I have ever actually scared myself when sailing, but some occasions were 'interesting'. Included in this group was my first time visiting Brighton, at 2 am and with a rising southerly F6, the various times we were out in fog and some boisterous passages, sometimes involving gear failure. Each time I was able to look back with satisfaction and retrospective enjoyment, and these provided some of my favourite memories.

On t'other hand, I don't think anyone should willingly seek conditions that might exceed their abilities, and possibly put themselves and others in danger. More importantly, I think we each have our own way of enjoying sailing according to our various psyches, from ocean sailing to sailing a model yacht on a pond and I don't think we should impinge on others' autonomy by telling them what to do.

Agree completely ,maybe the title should have been “Does”…..not “Should”
