Goung up the Orwell tomorrow and want to stay overnight in Ipswich. Can anyone recommend which marina to use in the Wet Dock and any suggestions for a reasonably priced good pub meal with decent beer?
Swings and roundabouts for either... Haven is more expensive but has a small restaurant on the quay... (food is good and my daughter works in there as a barmaid / waitress!.. if you go in say hello to Zoe!) But they have just pur the prices up and the food is a bit expenxsive now.. i think anyway! (£18 for a steak.. £5 for a dessert!) Also has a washing machine and a chandlers... but no benefit if you don't plan on using them!
I moor in Neptune - more friendly, very helpful but you have to walk for 10 minutes to get to the Last Anchor.. or 5 minutes to the Lord Nelson pub (good beer and good grub!) When you berth at Neptune the guys will give you a map of what's where... There are loads of other restaurants near by from Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian and Pizza... so no where too far for some good nosh!
I am a berth holder at Haven marina having moved from Neptune. Haven is New has good showers etc -- Neptune is ready for updating ! There is more late night noise at Neptune quay side and has been some vandalism!
The distance to walk beteween the two marinas is of no consequence, so all external restaurants and pubs in Ipswich are near by. Enjoy your visit.
Sorry for delayed response..dad ill other side of country.
Used Haven on advice from a chap at Shotley where I called in on way up river.
Facilities good, new @ clean. Bar is OK but the food is expensive. £12 to £16 for main course. I dont dispute it looks OK but I only want to pay £5 to say max of £8 for a main course. I dont want to pay for a table cloth!
Next time I will try Neptune as I now understand it is nearer to a good pub or two. I had allready departed before most of the other responses had come through. It was an interesting sail up the Orwell and I would certainly do it again. Wife enjoyed it which does help!
