Should I sell?

I am going over to the dark side. I will be buying a small mobo, a Peche Promenade type, so that SWMBO and dogs can come out with me, potter about do some fishing & exploring together because she has decided she likes being out on the water but all the bits of string are too much trouble.

The question is, should I sell Ameera? She's a great little yacht, real fun to sail, a 28' Pacesetter with a lifting keel. She's old (c. 1980 ?), and therefore benefits from TLC which I am afraid I won't have time to give - running a business and going out on the mobo. She's sound, quite quick, has a recent Beta engine, recent Steve Goacher 'racing' main & genoa, a comprehensive wardrobe of older cruising sails, a new Raymarine ST2000+ auto-pilot, working Eberspacher, an old VHF, dodgy GPS, OK radio/cassette, a tired 2-burner hob, a couple of anchors and assorted fenders etc.

So, some investment made, some still to make. She's in Fleetwood at the moment, but I was intending to bring her over to IoM very soon. Now I wonder if it is worth it. Am I going to put new VHF, GPS/Plotter and hob into a boat that I barely have time to use never mind maintain? I can sell her now or sort her out to keep, or sort her out to sell at a higher price - what does the panel think?

Should I keep her, sell her now, or make good and sell her? And what might she be worth? £10K?

Some pictures of her in my blog - link below. All advice, comments, and even offers /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif welcome. Really can't make up my mind, selling seems like a lot of hassle, but so does keeping her if I don't use her.

So many sailing friends I have known that have changed their boat to suit their partner and the end result has always been the same. NO ONE ENJOYS THE NEW BOAT

Friend had a Vega, wife hated the tipping so he bought a catamaran, she never even came out with him. Sold Cat and bought a MOBO, same thing but at least she came out once. If they dont like boats then they dont like boats.

You will just end up also not liking boats! But without your pride and joy as she would of been sold along the line....

If you can afford 2 then run both boats for a season - as soon as you're sure SWMBO wants to continue with the mobo then you can look at selling the proper boat ... unless you've got ideas about selling the mobo and using the additional sailboat money to buy a better sailboat!

Just send the boat down to me and I'll look after her and sail her for the next few years while you decide what is best for you..........lol

We may have the same friend! Very similar story, wife hated sailing and everything to do with it. He changed boats over and over to get her to like them, cats, motor sailers, mobos, power boats, very nice cruisers (he wasn't short of money) made no difference. In the end he used to skipper someone else's boat on cruises and she would go by train and meet at the destination but continually asked ' When are we going on a proper holiday?' He's given up now, doesn't sail at all.

As there are only 9 more Pacesetters around (I've read your blog) you aren't going to get many peeps rushing up to Fleetwood waving chequebooks so it could take a long time to shift her.
Put her on the market and resign yourself to lotsa sailing meantime.
Reject any offers if you change your mind!

Castletown was the plan, need to reconfirm with the harbour master. it's drying, but being a lift keel she should take the sand bottom OK, just needs a wall space or legs to help keep her upright.

Thanks Steve, fortunately not the case here. SWMBO is encouraging me to keep Ameera as well as buying a mobo - indeed she has been working out the household finances to buy the mobo (bought a new house last month so money is going in all directions /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) - what more can one ask of a SWMBO than she manages the household to finance the boating ?

My main worry is whether I will have time to look after / use Ameera, whether the pressure of maintenance will become too much of a burden on my available time etc. Am considering lending her to someone for a season or two - "free loan but you look after her and bring her back in a slightly better state of repair than she is now" sort of deal. Might well do this if I find a suitably trustworthy boater in need.

Hi there I have brought this boat as a project on the IOM ! I could u tell me a little more about what she sails like and anything else that would be of interest? Am sorry to say atm she is in a sorry state but am doing a full restoration to get her back to her former glory and get her back out sailing again ! Any information would be greatly appreciated
