When we got our current boat about seven months ago I was intent on renaming her. Anyway, we couldn't reach a consensus of opinion at the time and so she continued to bear the name 'The Great Escape', as christened by her first owner. My good lady says TGE is a good name as it reflects the boat's raison d'être, but to me it's something of a mouthful, too many syllables. Our last boat was named 'Lady Louise' and I'm half minded to use 'Lady Lou' as a new moniker for TGE. Another benefit of renaming would be to replace the hard to read lettering currently used, see pic.

Not withstanding the jumping through rings of fire and throwing fair maidens to the deep to appease Mr Neptune etc, what do folk think? I'll have my SSR to change, my CG66, and OfCom's MMSI registration as well.

Nope....I think TGE is a great name, it sums up boating pretty well I think. I do agree (looking at the pic) about a change of font to make it clearer tho.

:)
Edit: just looked again at the pic and I've changed my mind; I think the lettering is fine as it is.

+ 1 & + 1 re the lettering..... I like it.

Losing the "The" would be less of a mouthfull, and would preserve the intention of the original name.

Just a thought.

Sorry to tripple post but...

My first boat was called DASH.

I made the mistake of asking the previous owners what made them choose the name and the reply was that we are David and Sheena, hence DASH.

As a result of knowing this I always thought I was cruising around in david and sheena's boat. My advice is to rename her and make her your own!!

I always rename a boat to make her mine, I will name her and have a glass of finest malt whiskey as I tell her of he adventures we will have together, and with the last bit of whiskey in the glass I will wet her bow and wish us many safe journeys together.
Soppy ****e I know, but you depend on her and she on you.

Rename

We re-named ours Latest Trick (it was The Big Apple).
No special burnings, champagne or ceremonies, just new stickers and a couple of bottles of good wine to celebrate.
I'm sure Poseidon & Neptune don't mind if the change is for a good reason!

TGE is a good name, but it's not your name. Go for the change.

If you rename the boat it is absolutely vital that you follow the correct procedures to remove all traces of the old name including removing it from the "Register of the Deep" and purging it from Poseidon’s memory.

See http://boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/rename.htm for all the detail of the renaming ceremony.
