There I was yesterday, after a hard week at work, at anchor in Newtown Creek. I was just thinking 'well this is nice, peace and quiet, cup of tea, book and sunshine'.

And then the bloke downstream starts his little Honda generator.

I can see him sitting in his cockpit also reading and I think that he will switch it off after a little while.

2 hours later its still running and ruining the peace and quiet, and I am thinking that this could go on all evening. 2 options: I start shouting at him to turn the bloody thing off therefore upsetting the reason for being here in the first place, or move....well I moved, most of the good spots were gone by that time (6 ish) and I ran aground whilst looking for a 'hole' and had to wait 45 mins for the rising tide to lift me off.

Finally I dropped the hook again and settled in for a good nights kip.

Why are people so thick headed about noise, I suppose its the same as when we were kids and people always used to take radios down to the beach and @uck people off with the racket.

Next time maybe I'll just go over and say something but these things are never straight forward and by the time I,d weighed anchor to approach, him I may as well have moved.

Anyway I did Newtown back to Portsmouth in 1hr 55mins this morning with 9.5kt SOG past Cowes.

Funny you should raise this point...
I was in Alderney last week and thought, its been a few days, the batteries are dead, I'll get the generator going.
Its a Kipor 2000w jobbie.
Anyway - wound it up in the cockpit and my goodness!!! SWMBO and I had to shout at each other to be heard, so after 10mins it was turned off and we started the main engine, we could have our tea and coffee in peace then...
I definately wouldn't like to be downwind of us, so will probably only use it
in an emergency or well away from everyone...
I only bought it for keeping the freezers going at home during a power cut anyway, well thats my excuse...
engine, we were leaving shortly for Cherbourg so wasn't a problem....

Heard a wonderful tale about this sort of nuisance - probably a Caribbean urban myth, but still a pleasure to listen to:

UK flagged boat anchored in the same bay as a septic boat. Septic has his generator running so that he can run the aircon. UK boat offers not to fill the water intakes with quick-set epoxy if the Septic boats co-operates and turns off the generator. The septic declines co-operation and that night the water intakes were filled with epoxy. Septic captain had to learn to sail off the hook and into a marina.

It makes me mad too; people are just so b.......y selfish these days. One tries to treat others as one would like to be treated oneself - but the trouble is that oneself blo...dy well isn't!!!!

Drop a note in the offenders cockpit,''peeps come here for the tranquillity and nature. There are perfectly good shorepower facilities at Cowes. Please don't come here next weekend and spoil everyones pleasure again.thank you''
Should do it.

Wooos!!

You SHOULD be much more assertive.

Next time get SHMBO to swim over with a big pair of boltcroppers and cut his anchor chain.
That'd teach him!

I was enjoying the tranquility of an east coast creek, when a motorboat anchored nearby. Very soon a loud generator noise started. I put up with this for a while but soon generated enough steam to go & remonstrate, so pumped up the dinghy and rowed over.
On the way I realised that the noise was coming not from the mobo, but from some farm machine over the sea wall.
I carried on rowing, pretending I was out for exercise, well I wasn't going to argue with a farmer was I?
Glad I didn't shout at him first.

Probably was reading his book with his I Pod earphones jammed in good and tight and volume high to drown out noise of genny, so would have been waste of time shouting at him.

One of my daughters does this when reading and has it so loud that it makes it impossible to hear the TV, so why bother with the earphones? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

iT REMINDS ME OF A BOOK I ONCE READ ABOUT NOISY HALYARDS AND ANCIENT MARINERS CARRYING A TREE PRUNER!ONE SNIP AFTER DARK ...PEACE AND QUITE

Everyone is entitled to enjoy there space as they see fit,
BUT WHY DO THEY DO IT IN MINE!!

I reckon most people do make a bit of noise when they are engaged in some pursuit. It's only when you're looking for some relaxation that other's noise becomes irritating.
That's why the skiers and jetskiers on Windermere could never see the objection to their noise.
We still get bloody awful, deafening noise from the evening Jazz Cruises and various wedding disco cruises on the big ferries. The noise really carries. It spoils everyone's enjoyment of the evening lake.

Just thought I'd mention that.

Yes

Quite right

I always send SWMBO on this type of mission

She frightens me more than I do so much more effective
