I need to meet Mrs Xyachtdave in the Harwich area on Monday 19th.

I've not been into Shotley or Levington so was hoping to visit one of these. Any thoughts on either appreciated, bearing in mind the crew consists of my 11 year old daughter (who would appreciated something to do/look at!) and me (likes Belgium beer etc).

Any info appreciated!

Neither have much for an 11 year old as they are stuck out in the sticks, suggest you make your way up to ipswich either Neptune or Haven Marinas, they are only a few minutes walk from the centre of town and has a large cinema complex nearby.

On the other hand, there's a regular passenger ferry from Harwich, a short walk over the lock gates at Shotley and there's a grassed area and a bit of beach to play on, a few benches to sit on to watch the big ships at Felixstowe coming and going and food available on site [cough].

One good point for Levington or foxs if you are short handed.... you don't have to go through a lock.

If one arrives at or nr Hw Ipswich has a free flow in & out of the haven which means no stopping also it has a nice pontoon to tie up against which is easier , out of the two I prefer Ipswich (with kids) , we visited there twice in last couple of weeks .

Thanks for the opinions on the merits of these.

I'm thinking now the closest with space will win the day after a 5am start from the Medway! Then up to Ipswich to meet Mrs XYD the following day.

As a first visit to SYH I was pleasantly surprised by the set up. Helpful chap on the radio gave clear instructions as to where our visitors berth was (wasn't the weather for trundling around a marina driving up and down tight dead ends looking for berth xyz !) and we had food at the lightship which was good. I did have to divulge the length of the boat though :-(

The on site trades look quite helpful if you need them, rigging, engineer, sails etc (fortunately not required by us...)

Just deciding where to go next, you're spoiled for choice up here for places within an easy couple of hours, I'm slightly jealous!

PS
If anyone knows who puts the pot markers out near the Medusa buoy - tell him to get some flags for his milk bottles or whatever he's using - very nearly ran those over!
