Just toying with an idea here, which boatyard or marina is closest to the City of London from a commuting perspective?

Criteria are:

  • Accessible with a 7ft draft.
  • Floating or hardstanding.
  • Let's assume the waiting list for St. Catherines is impossibly long.
  • This would just be for 2 to 3 night a week.

Galleons, or squat in Deptford Creek. South Dock is full I believe. Presuming you are mast up?

Yes preferably mast up but could be persuaded.

Galleons is a new one on me, no need for an alarm clock right under the approach to City Airport. I wonder if my 50ft mast would constitute a hazard to aviation.

Limehouse. Afloat.

Maybe depends on how long you need the berth for and when. I've been on the waiting list for a berth for 7 years (actually they've possibly forgotten me) but I know of one forumite who spent a winter there on a temporary basis.

I've spent the same amount of time on the wait list for a residential berth at South Dock (and I certainly was still on the list last year when I checked), though I think non-residential berths are easier to come by

With a 7' draft and 50' air draft, it sounds very much to me that you have a boat that isn't exactly conducive to London living.
St Katherines will have a long waiting list if your boat looks lived on, if not then you'll get in quickly.
Limehouse has a long waiting list for residential.
Southdock has a long list for residential. Visitors is a different thing entirely.
Poplar Dock has recently had a bit of a clear out by hiking their prices. Not sure of the status on waiting list there now.
Galleons reach, has a waiting list, but can fit people in for overwintering fairly easy it seems.

But with a boat like it sounds like you have, your options are more limited.

I kept mine in Essex on the River Crouch and commuted to London on the commuter service train. The drop in mooring fees more than covered the cost of transport.

Gillingham, half mile to station with good service to London Bridge, Charing X etc. Cheap, relatively, and very pleasant marina. Mud pontoon berths even cheaper, but still have taps and elec.

I looked at Gallions Reach last year. It was a bit like being on the set of 'The Long Good Friday'. Not for me.
