Shorter winters: next marina rip-off?

[ QUOTE ]

In a situation not to your liking, there are always three (and only three) options: put up, get out, or change it. But please don't moan.

[/ QUOTE ] quite agree. I don't think marinas are set up and registered as charities. All businesses, if they are working properly, will charge what the market will bear. If the money's there, get it.
Most businesses, providing they are not trying to gun other businesses out of the water, will move their price point slightly higher than the market wants. Thus keeping spare capacity. Or put another way, earning the same for less effort.
It's not the marinas', or any other marine business's, role to support the shoestring sailor.
I am a shoestring sailor myself and arrange my activities to make the most of my meagre budget.

Brendan would argue black was white if it would prove a point or put some smart arse's nose out of joint.

Well done Brendan - call it as you see it.

BTW if you don't like paying marina charges then leave the marina and put your boat else where.

Now if everyone did that the price would come down. (Over supply and under demand)

Hi adrian,

No you don't, at least I don't. Mind you, my mooring is well up the Tamar so reasonably protected though with a fast tidal flow at times.

I make and lay my own mooring gear, so am able to ensure it's construction/size etc is well over what is needed. It is checked every year and any worn parts replaced - after all, it's my pride and joy hanging on to it!!

The details were given to the insurance company and have never been questioned during the last 27 years.

Interesting question but I don't know the answer. I've always been on a swinging mooring so I've never had insurance for a Marina berth.

I imagine that it will be much the same. On a swinging mooring the boat is a bit more exposed to the elements, but in a Marina a boat is more exposed to damage by other boats. I suspect that it's swings and roundabouts.

Checked with my insurance company and it would increase my premium by about 30% if I was not in a marina. Given the amount the marina costs it would probably still be cheaper to leave the marina. Mind you I don't expect there are many moorings for a 55 ft, 35 ton boat!

As we're on a swinging mooring the insurers insist we are out of the water from 1 Oct to 31 March. There is a fortnight's leeway but it still means we have to be out of commission for 5 months of the year. None of those nice autumn and spring sails /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There's probably not that many Marina berths for a boat that size either. I can imagine them trying to squeeze you onto a finger pontoon with all the 30 footers. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Snowleopard. That makes 6 months, don't you mean 31st October? I know what you mean about the off season sailing, but I think most people, myself included, are fair weather sailers. I mentioned the possibility of January sailing to SWMBO a couple of weeks ago. She just shivered and shook her head; I know when I am beaten!

We are the ultimate fairweather sailors, but get at least half a dozen winter sails in each year. There are some wonderful days on the lake, as long as the wind's not Northerly.

Only joking, that was February, but there are beautiful days as well.....

and February again

Hi Snowleopard,

That's interesting, our insurance covers us in the water 12 months a year. As it happens we do lift out anywhere between mid October to mid November, but that doesn't affect the premium and is up to us.

Perhaps I should save some money, and tell them we're ashore!

Cheers Jerry

When I moved from marina back to swinging there wasn't an increase in insurance premium and I am able to keep it there all winter if I choose to.

Oh no it wouldn't. If everybody does that, there is over demand and under supply in the place known as elsewhere and we are all back where we started??????????
