Hi,

I sailed last summer without personal yacht insurance liability although the yacht was covered because I hold a Yacht master I was not entirely happy with sailing with a group of people I had never met and be the person ultimately responsible just incase the worst happens and we run aground due to poor chart information, or when one of the guests is on the helm decides to gybe the boat without telling anyone and subsequently another guest is knocked out.

I go through all of the safety aspects of the boat and have worked for 3 years in the industry but never without insurance. As I find myself back in the UK working 9-5 I have no need for Worldwide Yacht and health insurance cover. So come Summer when I head off for 5 weeks of Sailing with the Yacht Week what would be my best option for the "worst case scenario.

Thanks alot

James

Whats "although the yacht was covered because I hold a Yacht master" mean?

Where you sailing commercially?
Not that that matters entirely, in the event of injury/death of anyone on board ( even friends), the Skipper has a liability.

Thankfully, such events are rare, but a friends' widow might have no option but to take action.

You sound as if you are looking for professional indemnity cover. Is that right? In that case, I'd expect the insurers to demand a full commercial endorsed YM ticket.

I'd start by ringing around a few brokers - Bishop Skinner, GJW, St Margaret's - and asking them. They'll probably say "no" but may know someone who can help.
