silly report of a couple of days away in Yarmouth.... so very mundane, however I took a few pics and thought I would post to try and encourage others to do the same!

Saturday - Hamble to Yarmouth,

Mercury, saw Steve D (Thanks Mum) and met Dave / Solitaire.

Tulana ready for anything!

nice SE running up through the eastern Solent meant lumpy right from the off leaving Hamble... remembered to get my camera out only when we had past the worst and getting in the shelter of the island.... being chased by Lindisfarne? (Nelson 42) also heading to Yarmouth,

Cruising along at 12 knots, true SD hull now with keel and no crashing and bangs, just solid and smooth if not a little rolly (note compass..)

and back the other way...

incredible how many raggies out on Saturday with bare poles... although I don't blame them.

& strange that there were not many other Mobo's out...

got into Yarmouth next to our friends Lochin... I'm feeling less envious now I have something a little more equal in stature, although I know I'm not quite there!!

lunch... oddments but tasty!

Had a windy and wild couple of days in Yarmouth, was pretty busy with a Westerly association rally (where were you Colhel, you got to organise your Bank Holidays better!), but although fully booked there were a few finger pontoons empty due to no shows. Nice to see Ben (burgundyben) & swmbo.

Then Monday the sun came out and the wind dropped to nothing..

swmbo feeding seagulls (... I know, I know, I just can't stop her)

return run to Hamble couldn't have been more different.

Leaving Yarmouth

When did you come back on Monday? we were out (Hythe to Cowes and return ) between 12.00 and 16.00 and it was not flat by any means.

we left Yarmouth just before 10.30ish to take advantage of the last of a favourable tide, into Hamble 11.30 & filled up with fuel, forecast was for wind to build during afternoon so I guess you got the choppy bit

We left Hamble at about 3pm and arrived at 4pm on Friday, bit choppy at Calshot (insn't it always) managed to hit 36 knots further along. Royal Southampton cruise were on the pontoon who we're replaced the following day with the Moody owners.

Spent a few mins onboard a fab Mitchell 31, owner was like a small child at Christmas...

We thought it looked a busy weekend in Yarmouth, but, what I don't get, is why some people show up for such a short period of time. Friday the place was quiet and by Monday when we left it was deserted. I guess we like to make the most of it.

Nice! I was walking on the South Downs yesterday (Monday) and, stood on Winchester Hill (at 2:30pm) there was a great view of the weather coming in from the SW. To our north it was clear; we were in sunshine; over Calshot looked overcast and south of the island looked quite forbidding.

Looks great James. Nice to see the mandatory growler as part of the lunch - strange how dodgy meat encased in thick pastry becomes attractive on a boat. Have a great season

Nice report James; Tulana is looking good!

We headed over from Gosport to Cowes on Saturday morning for a couple of nights. I haven't got photos as no spare hands to do so, but I concur the sea state was horrible and a real roller coaster heading out towards Gilkicker, improving when we got to the deeper water when it became just a messy following sea, but some surprisingly large waves considering it was sub 20 knots of wind and with the tide too. The women on-board who like it flat calm were not amused!

I bet it was rough coming out of Portsmouth, but I should imagine Chichester was even more exciting!

Great post and a lovely boat!
We were out Saturday 5-6.30pm. Lumpy and wobbly (not wet though) but some rib drivers were having a great time off Cowes. Your Mitchell will go through that all day!

There isn't such a thing as a silly cruise report in my books, nothing mundane about it, thank you for posting. Tulana is looking very sharp, I can imagine she was right at home in the choppy seas on the way over.

Lovely boat firefly. Thanks for posting the pics and story :encouragement:. Howabout fitting fin stabilisers and making her the best Mitchell in the world? Would make a good thread!

Ha!, that would be fun. Plenty of room for them... only issue I can see (apart from cost) is with a low freeboard.... might get a wave over!

Thanks for posting. I love reading cruise reports. Sets the mind to daydreaming and makes a change from the it's broken, it's fixed, I got it cheaper threads (which are a wealth of info, but dont quite set the wanderlust juices flowing) :encouragement:

'Proper' boat that

+1

I've been a sailyboat person all my life - dinghies, racing, cruising, square rig, gaff rig... But boats like yours, and the Seaward range which I spent a while ogling in Cowes the other week, I'm finding very very appealing :)

As someone brought up to believe that "stinkpots" were invariably ruinously expensive to go anywhere in due to diesel costs, do you mind if I ask what sort of fuel consumption you typically get?

Cheers,

Pete
