Why does the power of the engine drop when i operate the engine trim button?
Something seems to be shorting out.

The boat is a Sealine 215 with 5.0l volvo engine and leg.

Cheers...

Alistair...

If your boat is the samew as in your profile piccie, you can get a short burgee staff which fixes to the stainless steel pulpit like mine:

Yes the boat is on the plane, and rpm is roughly 3-4000rpm, Anywhere between 1/2 and full throttle.

I've noticed the same happen to mine when trimming the leg at half power. Tends to happen more when just on the plane, which sounds as if you are. I now trim leg with a bit more throttle to compensate, but as this is my first boat have assumed I'm draining power from engine (similar to air con unit in car). May be I have the same problem?

How big is the power drop as mine is just detectable?

Has it just started to happen after your recent service?

Haydn,

I got a new horn from ASAP Supplies.

Its louder than I had hoped for, and not a lot of money.

the trim is driven by the battery and the comparison to the draw from a car alternator isn't really applicable here.
I suspect that you are getting less drive to water rather than less power from engine to drive.
Fastest way to a conclusion is to take out someone experienced and show them

Think there was a similar post to this a few weeks ago.

The conclusion was that by trimming the leg, the boat was starting to drop off the plane.

When the boat drops off the plane, the engine will suddenly meet a sharp upturn in the load, due to the vastly increased resistances/friction of semi-displacement mode.

This will have a marked effect on a petrol engine running at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, since the power/torque curves are 'quite low' at that point, thus the engine will slow down.

Higher torques and better power spread from diesels mean they will not suffer as much.

Its not a case of getting less drive, It a case of when i push the trim button up or down, there is an instant drop on all the guages and the engine tone, as soon as i take my finger of the button it instantly returns to normal.

A poor example, It like driving your car at night with full beam on and the radiator fan kicks in and you can see the brightness of the lights dipping down a bit.

Begining to sound like a very loose or corroded main earth connection to the engine, or one of the other main connections.

I know when I fitted my trim/tilt pump, I took the main pos and neg feeds from the main engine terminals, so it's perhaps possible that the accessory feeds supplying all other equipment are the ones with a dodgy connection which breaks down once the trim/tilt motor draws it's amps.

Of course if the alternator's shot and the battery volts are low, the effect could be just what you experience, once a large load is applied to the system.

Agree, if you are getting that much drop first item to check is batteries and then alternator. Work back from there with connections.

Do you know when the fuse connections were last checked as that was what caused my voltage drop after checking all the connections. They had quite a bit of crud on them - quick clean - back to running order.
