Any advice on lift out and onshore storage near Conwy for a 10m yacht? Both Marinas look to have little shore room and I guess will be pricey.
Are there any places around Liverpool with lift out.
I am considering Preston as its very near to my home but it does seem pricey.
Of course I could upgrade my mooring strops and leave her where she is??
regards

Hi Peter, try abc marine in Beaumaris web page or Rhyl. Several of the club members use Rhyl but Beaumaris is obviously closer and easier to get to.

Port Dinorwic or Dinas boatyard on the other side of the Swellies both used to do boat storage. I believe Dinas used to be booked up quite early though.

What about Dickies?

At Liverpool you pay full marina rates to use the hardstanding and it's very dusty. Some interesting liveaboards in the yard though.

I have used Jalsea in Northwich for the last 2 years(10m LOA with 1.7M draft). Means a trip up the ship canal and R Weaver for £80 return but storage is £50/month in or out of the water. Descent power and water and handy to get to. http://www.jalsea.co.uk/. Takes 2 days from conwy, 1 to Ellesmere Port and one to navigate canals.
Alternatively Fiddlers Ferry Yacht Haven seems competetivly priced. http://www.ferryboatyard.co.uk/

I know all about Jalsea, the place seems to be run by a**s these days plus the whole trip feels like a wing and a prayer with duff bridges and absent lockeepers. As for Fiddlers Ferry the last boat I saw at Liverpool from there was covered inside and out with sand from going aground.

Northwich - Do you need a BSS cert to enter the canal?

I quite fancy the trip up the Weaver as it would pass my house, I wonder if they would let me park it on a wide bit so I could walk down to the boat over winter?

We were in Fiddlers Ferry in Winter 1992. It was a helluva squeeze getting into the lock, inches either side, though we are 13'9". Not a bad place to be, but I do remember power was a problem and we had to drag a genny there when we went to work.

Even though I am much closer now, at the time I was living in Hoylake, I would still be worried about security, FF is in the middle of nowhere.

And, yes, we got stuck in the mud the day we left, thick gloopy icky mud opposite the power station. No food on board as we only planned to get to Spike Island, we made it ashore for chips and got a right dressing down by one of the power station security bods who thought we were trying to get into the plant.

Me and me dad, oars in hand, covered in mud, were set to rob er, coal.

I might go there again, I think it is a bit busier now, but still, have they started locking the gate or lifting the bridge at night?

Alfred Dock looks more secure than it used to as they have fenced in the main yard, I wonder if that is a possibility?

I rang the Manchester Ship Canal people about access to the Weaver. After being passed around to more and more junior people, the bog cleaner came clean and admitted that they didn't want recreational traffic messing around on their canal and that unless I wanted to pay through nose for surveys - I had a brand new boat and apparently that didn't matter one jot - I should keep well clear of their turf.

At the time - last year - it all seemd to difficult.

wont be long before we have a viable marina in rhyl, the preliminaries are in place and european funds have been sourced and allocated.
sorry about the lift the other week jules, we were trying to get into the harbour and were getting tossed around a bit, then the plonker gin palace at the end of our aisle left his warps too long and was filling the aisle, we tried to push him aside twice and in the end we sat on the fuel jetty until the tide turned. it was 11.30 before we tied up, saw you perched 3 up

You get your permit from the Runcorn Office. If you ring up D.Head at Jalsea in Northwich he might give you the name and number to call.

No Problem Stu, it was a long shot. We had left the car in Barmouth and fully intended putting SWMBO on the last train of the day at 1830! We took the dinghy over to the HM at 1800 and tried ringing 4 local taxi companies to get to the station.

Everyone said their cabs were booked up all night, next cab we could get would be 2100 plus - rubbish! you mean I am English more like. Long story short it was too late to even run for the station by then. So left TC there as we needed first train in the morning at 0600 when she would have been dry on our mooring.

Got told off sort of by HM as some 'moody' yacht complained. Apparently someone was on his pile, so he had to go into the space behind us, and because we were rafted he had to turn his rudder to get in. His boat was still there 2 weeks later tied on to the ring with what looked like jib sheets!

I am fed up of the harbour now, transport is crap, everything is a mile walk from the slipway and now grumpy ol farts are complaining because we made it more difficult for them to get onto a mooring that was not even theirs!

With the A55 I still didn't get SWMBO into work until 1300 Monday, joy! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are they going to get rid of the locals too!

What are the intentions with the river, are the going to put a tide gate on or try to keep it dredged so leaving a deep pool all the time?

Still a long way to go anywhere, Conwy, Liverpool at a push, Fleetwood and Preston. I just don't see the area taking off without massive infrastructure changes to all the NW English and Welsh coast lines. Time will tell, one place has to start it I guess.

They should have built a tide gate on the Marine Lake at West kirby and added some deeper water moorings in their. Sod the kids in dinghies, marina's is where it is at! ;P
