Hi guys,

We've purchased an Elizabethan 30' (1970) which is generally in great condition. However, one of the things mentioned in the survey was as follows:

A crude shore circuit is fitted, consisting of a cable with 13a plug connected to two 13a sockets in the accommodation. This has no RCD trips so it must not be used.

Speaking to the marina owner, he says that this type of setup is quite common on older boats, and that we shouldn't worry about it.

My question for you guys is: what's the issue with this type of setup? Is it indeed perfectly adequate? I understand that this system won't charge my batteries, but I'm not really concerned about that. I'm more questioning it from a safety point of view.

Thanks in advance,

Jimmy.

I've done a little research on this and as a result have ordered myself a couple of RCD adaptors from screwfix. Sounded like the risk was too high to leave as-is.
