Shoal Waters (Charlie Stock\'s old boat)

Charlie Stock's old boat, Shoal Waters, features prominently in a nice photograph in a recent Natural England leaflet. The boat will be familiar to those around the Blackwater and readers of his book 'Sailing Just for Fun'.

The photo is taken at How Hill in the Norfolk Broads. I'm not sure whether it's Charlie Stock at the helm. I believe he sold the boat about five or ten years ago.

The document is "Responding to the impacts of climate change on the natural environment: The Broads. A summary" and can be downloaded (note this is 1.1mb pdf file) by clicking the 'Broads Executive Summary' link on the following web page http://naturalengland.etraderstores.com/...ed-eeb6a98251ae

Pretty sure it was last year when I met him sailing past Osea and we had a chat for a while.

He had just come back from Southend. It was the same boat as normal as far as I remember.

There's a nice article in the May Yachting Monthly about him and some details about Shoal Waters, it confirms he's still sailing, but just in the Blackwater now.

I thought it was a good book.

SWMBO didn't; she said

"well, he's a bit of a grumpy old git isn't he"
.......... and gave me a very strange look. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yes, we saw him on the Crouch, sometime last summer. He sailed past Bridgemarsh - along the creek past the boatyard, and then we saw him anchoring on Buxey sands as we went out a bit later on. Presumably he was on his way back to the Blackwater, and was waiting for enough water to cross the Raysand.

Green boat with tan sails - easy to recognise.

I walked past Charlies boat Shoal Waters this evening. She is on her usual mooring on the R Blackwater. I am pretty certain that Charlie still owns her, he definately did last year.

I thought the book was great for the first few chapters then got a bit repetitive. Fully agree with the overall concept of a small boat providing the most fun

She, the boat, was out on the Blackwater at noon today. Looked beautiful.

Shortly after getting married I said I wanted to go sailing again and buy a boat. Being a chap I thought the best introduction would be a chandlers, seeing as how we would be spending most of our Saturdays and most of my salary in them. Wife picked up his book (picture of mud EVERYWHERE). and calmly said "I don't think that looks like fun; how do you wash the mud off?" 2 years later we bought a cat and have a 'bathroom' not a 'heads'. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

He was on the Crouch on Saturday. AWe saw him somewhere down river of Burnham in the morning and anchored next to Essex marina in the afternoon, so he must sometimes leave the Blackwater, still.
