Fantastic pictures, but I'm left wondering why the crew on the coast guard ship are working on a slippery deck with no lifelines and apparently no lifejackets either. Or am I just being paranoid?

Our transatlantic friends don't believe in Health and Safety to the same depths of paranoia as in Europe. I've been on US ships before, and steel toed flip-flops and hard baseball caps are all that's required on deck.
