Has gone away and is adamant that he won't be back although he'll be keeping an eye on posts from time to time

He sent me a friendly mail to explain. For now he's looking forward to the summer down under, with himself and his wife sailing and a visit to Oz

He hasn't done this before - he changed his persona on one occasion

He wasn't happy about the treatment by some of a certain forumite, but it wasn't the sole reason for his leaving. Maybe just the final straw

I cannot pretend to agree with John on every issue, but I do respect him for his valuable opinions and contributions

Best wishes John

well, I have read this way down in Santiago de Chile on a business trip, in the soulless lobby of a coach tour hotel that happens to have free internet - something at least. Just got back for a good dinner, though, with an excellent bottle of Concha y Toro Cabernet followed by a glass of Carlos Primero. I should admit to having been mostly a lurker on these forums for some time and an occasional contributor when I thought I had something valuable to offer, but all the same I feel part of the community. I know that regulars disparage those of us who do not get stuck in every day - but really life isn´t always quite like that. No point in starting to engage in a discussion and then finding you just can´t log on for several days. Not to mention the fact that my boating, at least, is confined to a month in the summer and, dare I mention it here, since the knees got dodgy, a motor cruiser on inland waterways rather than all that tipping over stuff offshore. All the same, I felt the singlehanded voyage down the Rhone last year (and back with SWMBO, whose idea of boating is changing into canvas sneakers) pretty satisfying, and I hope hlb will approve of the lack of bow thruster, despite some dodgy moments in confined spaces on a single screw. Of course all this reader involvement is something quite new to my generation of hack - when I was editor of YW (69/70?) it was a question of fielding the difficulty customers at Earls Court once a year and taklng them off to the Guiness bar in extremis. So what´s to be said about he who shall not be named? Well I often found his threads entertaining and frequently informative. I missed most of the 11/11 drama that lead to Lucifer being cast into outer darkness for all eternity, but I will certainly miss him, and others apparently too. So what´s the point of this late night rambling? difficult to say, but I appreciate flame-throwers may doubtless being primed - it´s Air France for umpteen hours tomorrow. Or maybe no reaction at all, which could be more discouraging. But at least it´s not just lurking!

Saluti a tutti

I refuse point blank to say that we ever agree on anything , but you've summed it up very nicely and john will most definately be missed from here let's just hope that they enjoy a bit of quality time together

Re: Ships_Cat is rumbled

Tome has the key to this
GC1 is really Mrs Ships cat and they have contrived a way of getting off the forum whilst they go off on their holidays.
Personally I'm not sorry about Ships Cat going in any way shape or form.
Those Nasty New Zealanders have made fools of our brave lads on the rugby field yet again and goodness knows what is going to happen to English Cricket this winter - one of them has come home with stress at the prospect of playing without raising a bat in anger.
So good riddance says I and I think we should call for a ban on all Australian and New Zealand forumites.
We could of course have a separate forum forem?

Re: Ships_Cat is rumbled

ESPECIALLY the Scots. Unless they promise to talk proper, eat more vegetables and stop drinking all the Whiskey.
They are crap at rugby and no good at all at cricket anyway thats why they complain about our Antipodean friends. Makes a change from having a go at the English who are superb at both though - wingeing lot.
Chuck em off I say!!

Re: Ships_Cat is rumbled

My apologies I must have got the teams mixed up - so England were wearing those shirts with the pale blue bits on and Argentina had the white ones with the red bits on.
I do apologise once more.

if I am not mistaken, has he not joined 'your' new small boat forum ............ in which case you sound rather devious to me

in which case any more of you prolific comments are devalued /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Ships_Cat is rumbled

Your apologies are unreservedly accepted me old caladonian.... Just remember that's ENGLAND not SCOTLAND. Regardless of their shirts OK?

Re: Ships_Cat is rumbled

Bugger! Spelt Whisky wrong! Humble apologies and slap my wrist....
And if you want to eat an Englishman you will have to find one first! Recent programme on TV suggested most are either Pakistanis, Greeks or Frenchmen way back....
As for me I can choose to call meself English cos I was born in Woking but my Father was from Peebles and Mother from Australia with Welsh parents so you wouldn't want to eat me! The taste would probably be too strong for ye.....
A bit like a cross between Kangaroo and Venison wi a wee touch o Lamb perhaps......

It's alright, cats have nine lives so there's eight more chances that he'll return, eventually. I'll ask Keith to leave a bowl of kitekat out to tempt him back. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Ships_Cat is rumbled

An easy way to remeber is that whiskey has an E in it like Eire. No E in the words whisky and Scotland.

Anyway, i hardly knew ship's cat cos i got confused with shipswoofy, and thought they knew each other or summink. But nice people shouldn't clear off, really.

He has stormed off in the huff before, I'm sure he's got his reasons though, it must be very frustrating to be a very experienced professional and have amateurs poo pooing his advice with anecdotally founded or unfounded opinion, but he did sometimes come across like he was belittling other peoples opinion and sometimes seemed condescending towards the challenge of sailing anywhere other than in new zealand, but taken as a package he was one of the people I respected the most and most valued the opinion of on this forum and I always digested his advice even if I didn't initially agree with it it was well founded IMO.

The above quote pretty much sums up what I think too, good luck to him I'll miss his contributions. FWIW I would happily take two GC1s back if it meant that John would come back too.
