Sailing to France this year. I bought my Sadler last year, 2nd hand, and have a Bill of Sale made out on a MCA form.

I assume this will be sufficient.

What about a crew list? With crew being the wife, do I need this as well.

Is it actually mandatory to have your yacht registered if you want to sail abroad. I have certainly come across some who are not

Categorically, yes. UK does not require citizens to register their own yacht. But this is now demanded by virtually every other country you might visit (Ireland possibly excepted?), so there is no escape. On the spot fines if registration documents are not in order, in France and Spain.

Oh for the days when all we needed was a yellow flag and a passport. Now its a ton of paperwork to go most places: registration, insurance, VAT evidence, RCD status, VHF licence, ICC, CEVNI, CG66. And you don't even get to bring back duty-frees.

Do register your boat and do take the documents with you. I was fined 150 Euros last summer, in Caen, for not having my SSR document. That was the fine for not having the documents, the fine for not registering your boat is 2,000 Euros. Being boarded (literally) by two French Customs Officers, carrying guns is not a happy memory. I was "escorted" to the cashpoint and the cash was taken straight from the machine.

I usually do take all of the necessary stuff when I cross the Channel, I just forgot.
