Ships\' Mascots

Flicking through some old YM's at the weekend, I came across a Libby Purves article on the above. She suggested that the role of the figurehead on old vessels (warding off evil etc) has now been taken over by assorted objects (e.g. Nauticalia teddy bears with "skipper" emboidered on their vest).
Anybody care to own up to the lucky charm on their boat?

Re: Ships\' Mascots

A mascot in this sense is something that has no intrinsic value to the mariner, could not possibly help the boat or crew if something went wrong, yet it gives a sense of safety and well-being by its presence, and the boat would never sail without it, because it has been blessed by the gods.

On Evadne that would be the b*&$%y diesel engine.

Kim was given to me by my parents. I still haven't worked out what my parents must think of me if they give a grown man a stuffed toy for luck. Anyway, Kim is blind (so would you be if you had eyes like hers) and enjoys jazz and playing tennis with Stevie Wonder (and you thought that cricket was a five day test?).

I confess that Mirelle has two rag dolls, tucked into one of the saloon grabrails. They cost a pound each at a newsagent's shop and any resemblance to her owners is purely co-incidental...

I've got a wooden parrot that swings about on his perch. I've had him for 20 years and he has seen 3 boats. I usually take him home for the winter but this year he has stayed on the boat without so much as a complaint.
