ships\' cats

does anyone have any experience of having a live-aboard cat? Ours comes out cruising with us in UK waters when we're off on overnight trips, but what's the situation when travelling further afield? Is there anyway of avoiding quarantine etc. if the cat isn't actually going to go ashore?

Burden of Proof

It sounds as though you would have a problem if you enter France with a cat on board. You are saying the cat is not in France but on my boat, EEC apart I think like you the cat is in France whether you get off your yacht or not. Also as my heading said how would you prove the cat remained on the boat.
But I will gladly stand corrected, over to the experts? and no doubt its been done by somebody.

Your problem always used to be coming back into the UK - tho' I believe now that the UK are accepting vaccination, and you have all the necessary cat's papers with the ship's papers, it's not such a big problem.

Certainly I've seen lots of liveaboard cats and dogs in France, Portugal and Spain ans travelling between those countries.

The best was the 12-month old black cat, 5m out on the end of the bowsprit, conning a gaffer into la Rochelle Vieux Port. As soon as the boat had tied up she was off laying claim to every other boat on the pontoon.

friends of ours had cats on board. the biggest risk they met was cats getting into a neighboring boat via a portlight left open. owners away and port too high to get back out again!

in the caribbean we often saw ribs zipping through the anchorages with a dog standing in the bow, ears flapping in the breeze. what really surprised us was seeing a cat doing the same.

as far as i know you still have to re-import your animal on a participating air or shipping line and get a vet's certificate within 24 hrs of departure. that generally means a crew member coming back on a ferry.

<font color=blue>Take your Pussy abroad and you got problems coming back. Forget vaccination papers etc. etc. they do not apply to yotties. No good saying "but it didn't go ashore" How you going to prove that?

I suspect they'd consider it beneath their dignity - still it's an idea.

Did you hear of the Burmese cat (breed not nationality) who developed an allergy to fresh tunny in the Pacific?
It had to live on tinned catfood whilst the rest of the crew drove it mad eating sushi, tuna steaks etc.

It's a cats life...

Better than our dalmatian dog who developed an allergy to normal dog food and now has to be fed on £50 a bag egg/salmon and rice pelets from the vets! And he can't even climb masts or do repairs!

You have my sympathy - I've got to say though, that having sailed with both; cats appear to me to be far more naturally seamanlike - though they do like to wriggle into supposedly impassible corners of the baot and then have to be rescued - did you now that cats can't move backwards.
Our dog never got used to peeing at sea - he had to do it on dry land and even for a Labrador 20 hours without urinating is a major challenge.
When he did get ashore, luxuriating in the sense of freedom the 13th minute brought him, he was most discommoded when the whole sand-dune, undercut par cette pissance extreme, fell on top of him and we had to dig this poor bewildered beast out, like an earthquake victim.

Hmm. Dont suppose the Vet told you that then?

I had the same problem with my dog not peeing, so I would wait 12hrs or so and produce his lead and harness, bingo! Instant relief! No 2 was the same problem after a few days and a little olive oil in the diet the same trick worked again.

Dog pic on my home page...

I have cruised the Med and Baltic (I live in Barcelona) but never had a problem - except I could not take him into Sweden.. but thats a very long story...

Never did get him to change the foresail though.
