I was quoted £4500 to ship a 25 ft bayliner from Florida to the south coast of England which seems excessive to me. Has anyone shipped a similar size boat from the U.S, if so how much did it cost?
Many thahks...Jim

Contact www.exportamerican.co.uk and see if Gordon is still there.
He's a Brit and was very fair with me when I imported my bayliner. He sorted shrink wrapping, stateside transport and all logistics. I did buy the boat from him, but I think he'll do just the logistics, if not he'll talk price I'm sure.
4.5k seems far too much to me.

I don't think I need to pay for CE, Vat,or duty as I'm not going to use it over here, I'm planning to tow it away to north Africa

Thank you for taking time to reply

Do be careful though, as release from customs is based on the boat conforming to CE regs and RCD. I nearly fell foul of this. The same importer who saved me actually mentioned that there are many small and medium sized motorboats sitting, accruing dues, in customs over here. It is not insurmountable but make sure that the deal still makes sense after all cost are taking into consideration.
FWIW I was quoted $9000 for a 35' sailing boat from Jacksonville to Tilbury two years ago when the exchange rate was somewhat better to say the least.

I assume that you will not be registering the boat in an EU country. Have you considered shipping it directly to a non-EU port, say, Tunisia? Towing it or having it towed over 5,000 kilometres of road would cost you time and hassle besides the money.

Lot more to this than meets the eye. If it is on a US trailer it will be illegal in the EU. You will also need to pass through at least two EU states with a boat that cannot be used in the EU. You may be able to do this as a non-resident with the boat as a temporary import.

Why not have it shipped direct to your destination?

I think I'm going to have to ship it direct, towing is no big hassle though, for me anyway, it's only just over 1000 km of road from calais to Marseilles.

5000km will get you to Timbuktu and beyond, mmm I'm tempted.....

thanks again for the good advice

It has to be CE marked if used or put into service in the EU. If you are exporing to SA without selling you are doing neither.
I've seen a few come in and CE marking was never a condition of customs release - only paying the duty and VAT.
I have never known the CE marked be checked in service either - I certainly used mine for some time AND did foreign trips before I bothered. Not strictly legal I know but hey - who sticks to 70 on the motorway? The consequence of a stupid law, it's not respected.
