I have a shipmate 6800 VHF on the boat. It receives fine but neither handset transmit. They don't even try, it's like the PTT button isn't working.

Is this worth taking off the boat and getting fixed (is it fixable?) or just junk it and replace with a modern VHF. I like the modular systems but the Raynaribe Ray260 is very expensive

The Shipmate on my boat stopped working a few years back. I googled around for spare sets but didn't find anything that would make sense cost wise. I replaced it with a new Garmin and got the added benefit of DSC.

I get that parts aren't going to be available.
I wondered if it might be a simple fix with the PTT switch.
If both handsets used to work, and both stopped working at the same time, I think a simultaneous PTT switch fail is extremely unlikely...

Jez,

have you tinkered with anything? aerial, power, cabling?
as MM says, v.odd to stop transmitting at the same time.
All that is assuming it was working on the delivery trip or you have seen them working properly before!

I do also have a 8100, used it last year and this year I bought a s/h garmin vhf200 which unfortunately doesn't work (not complaining as I bought it for a dollar...) Once I get a new one or repair the garmin, I could sent you pieces of the 8100 for testing.
But I doubt it's the handsets.

cheers

V.

Just a thought, although I'm probably barking up the wrong tree, but I managed to inadvertently switch my fixed VHF to the US setting (some button press combination) which enabled me to hear over channel 80, but not transmit.

Googling eventually led me to the button combo to flip back to the European setting.

I have a RS8300 and the cable entry to the handset is very prone to damage. I had my cable damaged that shorted one of the cores in the hadset lead which stopped the handset working.

I would check the cables to see if there is a short in any of the wires as this cold cause both handsets to stop working.

If it the blackbox junk it and buy a DSC VHF with AIS and a remote mike like the S/H GX2200
