Together with a friend I have the opportunity of buy a Shetland 570 as a project boat (something for us both to do in the winter). Can anybody give me information on this class of boat, or is there a website that I can be pointed in the direction of. Any information greatly appreciated.

Once upon a time Shetlands were the biggest producers of small boats in Europe turning out their 17'6" ones at a rate of 400 a month. The original owners being John Hardy (latterly of Hardy boats) and Jack Stokes.
The 570 is a very good entry level boat which will serve you quite well for short coastal hops in clement weather. With an appropriate engine you can even water ski with it. It is also eminently suitable for rivers too. I cannot tell you if they have a website or active owners club. What engine does she have and what price is it offered at, does it have a trailer?

Shetland are still alive & kicking and the 570, as Byron says is a good boat. There is one down by us with a 70 Evinrude on the back - and it looks well. My other boating buddy has a 535 with a 55 Mariner and we have skied behind it!

There is a website and it contains loads of info such as the owners club and spares for older boats check this out http://www.shetlandboats.co.uk/boats.htm

You will get equal fun from restoration as you will from using it - enjoy!

Thanks Byron and Dave Snelson. She has an old Yamaha 25hp outboard which is not seized but I don't know if it runs. Has no trailer (a definite problem), the whole package has lain abandoned for a number of years now and is in a complete state of disaray because it has been lying open to the elememts. The hull is sound and very water tight judgeing from the amount of water that was in her. The price very cheap as she is a reposesion and requires a lot spent on her.

It might be worth you looking at the back copies of MBM. They covered such a renovation on a Shetland model the same as yours. Have a look at the copy shop thing to see if they still do it.

There are a number of things that will instanly improve the looks, value and useability of your Shetland.

Windows.... these generally go crazed, cracked and opaque. Get a professional perspex (or similar) fitter to fit and seal new ones, go for 3mm not the original 1.5 - much stronger and more durable. New windows look GREAT!!! and they keep the boat from leaking (rain that is!). My friends 535 windows cost about £150 all in.

The 25 Yam - I'm not sure what to advise here cos Yams can take the most appalling treatment and still pull through. Thing is - its woefully under-powered. If you can afford it, look on http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk as this is the best place to find something at 50HP and above - preferably Yam or even Suzi or Mariner (which is based on Yam anyway). Don't go above 70HP. Ditto the above site for a trailer - for goodness sake don't buy junk. Old junk trailers are very dangerous and cannot be repaired. Expect to pay £400-500 and look at it carefully before parting with your dosh.

Take a power washer to the hull and insides - dont be afraid to blast off old paint and any anti foul. DO NOT use pressure washers on wood work, they knacker wood completely. A lick of good quality white paint on the inside really brightens the whole thing up. Dont paint the exterior gel-coat, even if it has faded. Original colour is always best and painted boats look crap!

Is the rubbing strake knackered? New ones are available if you search through the Shetland site I gave you. This has a good effect on looks.

Have fun!!

Thanks again Dave,

I made a mistake with the engine size it is 30hp not 25hp as I previously posted so we will see how this pushes her. She is a project boat and will be sold on completion. Both my friend and myself are unemployed so we see her as a way to generating some dosh. Your points about the windows and trailer are noted thanks she could do with new windows.

She is about to be power washed inside and out. Unfortunately she has already been painted by a previous owner (hull only) and would benefit from being freshened up properly useing International Toplac or two pack reverting to the original colour. The deck is original GRP and will be left that way. It's amazing what a realy good polishing will do. The rubbing strake is ok.

Spent some time on her today clearing her out inside and was surprised how she looked with all the water and crap emptied out. Was considering relineing the inside of the cabin with carpet as the original is knackered ( fungus) but the berth cushions appear to alright.

Thanks again

Jim

I'd be interested in seeing pictures of her in her present condition, any chance of you sticking some up here? Also....... don't be coy, we are all friends here, we will not tell anyone else, it will be our secret. What are you paying for her?

Thanks Byron,

I really am shy, I never discuss politics, religion and money (only women).

I should have taken my digital camera with me before my buddy and I started cleaning her out yesterday, a mountian of composted leaves and about two hundred gallons of water and lots of yuck. I will take some photos of her at the state she is in at present and Pm them to you when I find out how to do this. Looking at her in the cool light of day without rose tinted specs. she is not in bad conition and I am sure power washing her will make a marked improvement (you can't beat elbow grease for improving things).

In the meantime thanks for your interest.

Jim

Because the OP was wondering how fast his 30 hp outboard would push a 570...The ad states that a 60 will push it to 25 knots tops, so he can probably expect 10-15 knots tops, with a 30.

I think the confusion arises because the question was asked nearly 15 years ago. No longer relevant perhaps ?

We started with a family 4 and it had a 60hp Mercury 2-stroke. It would easily get up to 25+ knots so hopefully 30hp will get the OP's on the plane.
It also had a 3hp Yamaha backup which was better for slow speed manoevering in harbour.
It was a nice, simple and straightforward boat to start on. We had it on a trailer at first which was also a learning curve. Launching it down the ramp at West Bay with half of Dorset leaning on the railings watching you was a good definition of stress especially when the bloody engine wouldn't start!
