I was on board with a friend when he tried the first method (attached to boom) on his boat, a heavy wooden long keeled 32 footer that's very heavy on the tiller at times, with some success. It was a first try & we reckoned that experimenting with different strengths of bungee in different conditions & points of sail it would definitely be doable...

However, you might find that you could get results with something even simpler than any of those methods, see here, he starts talking about the self steering just over 3 minutes in. Good luck with it...

There was an article in PBO 118 by Mike Saunders on sheet to tiller systems.

Another by Nick Skeates in PBO 143

Neither probably worth the reprint fee but maybe worth a dive into the cobwebbed, rat infested corners of the garage

the boat is steering itself

he is not actually using sheet to tiller steering

one of the advantages of a vega

Well it's certainly not sheet to tiller & I know the Vega is an excellent boat (:D) but I doubt they could go days abandoning the tiller & letting the boat steer herself!
