Info required .... I am in the process of purchasing a SHE 31 which needs to be re-engined. Currently has the original Yanmar YSE 8 and I am planning to use the Yanmar 2GM20F. Understand the SHE has a tight tolerance between prop/P bracket/ hull & whilst there is no problem with the fitting of the 2GM20, I am concerned about the space to fit a larger prop ( 13" ? ). The SHE is currently in the water and thefore inspection is limited.
Have obtained the necessary measurement details from a SHE 32 - Would the 31 be the same.

Ah But....

The 2GM20 is a tried and tested piece of kit......

We've got a She 31b that we are in the process of re-engining (?), but we're really cheap skates and have gone for the Beta 13.5 bhp.

He Who Obeys (I wish!) is in charge of the specification but you could give us a call one evening and he'll happily chat for hours about engines, props and She's in general.

A friend has a SHE 31, I'm sure he is swinging as 15" fixed prop - the space issue seems to be between the end of the shaft and the rudder skeg. I can ask him over the weekend if you would like. FYI he has a 2GM20 installed.

Here - all too new. I would wait a year or so until dealers/workshops become familiar with them.

This is exactly the question my friend has been asking .. no firm answer has been forth-comming to date. I'll ask where he is on his deliberations.

We are fitting folding prop..can't remember which one...its German I think...and we have been advised to go for a 14" x 9". Send me a pm with your number and I'll get Paul to give you a call.

Jeff ... would appreciate as much info that you can obtain. My new boat is "Gossander" built in 1978 and I will be keeping he on the Helford in Cornwall.

Hi I am the friend of Aeolus_IV mentioned in these dispatches. I have a She 31 fitted with a Yanmar 2GM20 and gearbox, which I am very happy with. She (no pun intended) was completely refitted some ten years ago by a previous owner and has as totaly non standard but very nice interior. I doubt if the Engine position or mounts were changed though and it all seems to fit nicely. My engine is mounted fairly far forward and the cover forms part of the saloon seating. Having not seen any other 'standard' She 31s I don't know if this is normal.

I am suffering from an oversized 3 bladed fixed pitch prop and would like to fit a folding / feathering alternative. Just eyeballing the space between the P bracket and rudder skeg I am worried though that a folding prop, as it folds, will foul the shallow curve where the skeg is blended to the hull. Feathering props tend to have a long boss before the hinge point of the blades. The alternative of course is a feathering prop and there is one type the JF prop designed for long keelers which has a very short boss. But feathering props are twice the price or more of folding props! My choice has narrowed down to two Bruntons props. The Autoprop and the Varifold. I have a sweep chart for the Autoprop (a feathering prop) which shows the arc scribed by the blade tips as it moves from fwd through min drag to reverse. The Autoprop also has a choice of long, medium or short boss length. Next month when my boat comes out of the water I will make my measurements and decision. She will be ashore for 6 to 8 weeks so if anyone wants any further details, give me a shout.

Julian .... thanks for your reply. What size prop do you currently use ? Did you have to increase the size of the shaft/change the P bracket due to the extra h.p. ?

Would appreciate a few measurements taken ...
a) length from c/l of shaft to underside of hull
b) length from end of shaft to back edge of rudder.
c) lenght of shaft protruding out of the P bracket.

To answer your questions .... Pass. The instalation was done and dusted when I bought her so I don't know what if any modifications were made. With reguard to the measurements you asked for, I'm in the same position as you as the moment with Witchdoctor being afloat. As I said at the end of March she is coming out of the water for 6 to 8 weeks when I will set to with tapes calipers and templates to find a solution. I will gladly pass on details and photos then. But if you are negotiating a purchase and want to make an informed decision now I'm sorry I can't give you any numbers yet. All the dimentions given in the prop brochures start from the begining of the taper on the shaft and I guess having a rope cutter fitted could be critical as well.

I've been mulling over this for months and have concluded that I cannot make a decision untill the boat is out of the water and I can offer up a few templates. As an aside Bruntons gave me the full sized sweep chart (an engineering drawing) free at the boat show which will be an invaluable tool so they get my customer service vote at the moment.

Finaly if you wish to make the hike up to Sussex in April / May you are welcome to come and have a look at the installation.

Julian .... I have decided to buy the boat . its currently in the Plymouth area and will bring it down to Falmouth in early April. Was planning to get the new engine done at this time but, the new 3 cyclinder engine from Yanmar looks very interesting. May wait if supply is "any day". But suspect it will be at the end of the season. Look forward to any info that you may obtain and in the meantime , if I make progress, I will get back to you.

Had a rifle through the mass of paperwork that came with the boat and found the engine was supplied by E.P. BARRUS Ltd but fitted by Northsore Yacht Yards, Itchenor Shipyards Ltd, Itchenor, Nr Chichester, W Sussex. PO20 7AY. If they are still around they may be able to help and may even have some installation plans. The Client was Mr E.P. Barnes and the work was done in the winter of 88/89. I also found an invoice for the prop shaft which is listed as 65.5 x 1 (inches?) Clements 3449.
