We are going up river next week, from Portishead to Sharpness and then on to Upton and hopefully Stourport

I remember having to have a bridge swung on the approach to Gloucester, it's quite high but we were a few inches to tall, Sealine F36 but with extra stainless steel on the radar arch that once held a satellite TV dome

I can't determine which bridge this is, near Pets at Home if that helps? Looked like quite a new structure

Are there still toilets and showers at Saul, British Waterways key needed? Or any other locations?

Also any advice on the best place for diesel?

Thanks in advance for any info

I haven’t been up the Sharpness canal for a few years, but if I remember rightly the first bridge that needs to be swung is the railway bridge. A man in a bike road out to the middle and wound a huge handle and the whole centre section rotated horizontally. After that there are lots of other bridges that lift of swing as you go up the canal.

I do not know what happens after Gloucester as I never went any further.

I’m pretty sure there’s a guide for the Sharpness -Gloucester canal available online.

Thanks for the links, I'll take a look at them

There is a lot of info but it's the name of that one bridge that is s electing me, I remember having to give 24 hours notice to have it swung

there is some useful stuff here

http://smyc.info/sea/4590369011

Netheridge bridge is the one you are thinking about , 24 hours advance booking required

https://www.waterways.org.uk/gloucandhereford/gs_boaters_guide

has more useful details

best place for fuel is at frampton on the right side going upstream, immediately at the end of the factory. sell 1 million litrs a month, farmers heating etc.

certainly amongst the cleanest I have bunkered throughout europe, including the Rhine. no connection other than satisfied customer.

use to be called acp, but I think Johnsons 01452 741821.

Hopefully will be anch below upton sat/ sun so say hi on way past, and can arrange a visitors mooring at SMYC below worcester, ( club does a good sunday lunch, (do have a connection as VP this year))

poster Sharpness has a similar height boat and could advise as to height etc.

Netheridge, that's the one!
I'll make sure I call 24 hours prior
Thanks for the links, give us a wave if see us pass

We went under Netheridge a few years ago and we scraped the underside of the bridge, reckon our air draft and the bridge clearance must be exactly the same
I read that the bridge is 4.75m which does seem quite high
We have some extra stainless steel welded on top!

You will easily get to stourport on an f36, graham netheridge has nowt to do with river airdraft.. unless your a yacht as river bridges dont move ?

Ring Gloucester lock for precise details. it is 4.5 mtr from memory , was supposed to be a mtr higher but contractors got something wrong.

Ha Ha, sounds about right

When I asked about swinging it, or lifting it I was told "the bloke is on holiday" but they would ring him anyway!

Thanks for all your input, we are locking in Friday lunchtime and are aiming to get to Upton and maybe Worcester, we want to spend a night at Tewkesbury aswell.

Bought a 7 day licence today, £42 as needed river and canal, is that right?

Anyone know if there are showers and a loo at Saul Junction that I can access with my British Waterways key?

All I need to do now is find my way up to Sharpness!

Sneds saul and glos both have showers, upton has a music festival on this weekend so will be busy... maybe pass somewhere as we'll be heading the other way.. good luck ?

Think you passed us on Sunday?

Had a great lunch, cold beer and a friendly welcome at the Severn Motor Yacht Club yesterday, nice place

Hope the weather holds for our trip back down to Portishead

Just one river based question, why are (most) fishermen so grumpy?

I get either a wave or no reaction at all from fishermen. I guess that fundamentally they don't want someone in a motor boat spooking fish they are trying to catch. Most are appreciative if you keep as far away from them as possible whilst passing however it's not always possible to see them coming if they are e.g. hidden behind a bush!

Fisherman on the bank right by Netheridge bridge got quite annoyed that I was waiting for the bridge to swing, suggested that I lower my mast!
Boat is a Sealine F36
I would say what I suggested in return, a more unpleasant and obnoxious individual I have yet to meet
